For an indigenous artist from a people of the sea, interaction with the ocean is not just a concept of space but a sensed connection with all life in the universe. While diving once, Iyo was surprised to see no schools of fish among the coral. He realized that the ocean floor was covered with tons of discarded fishing nets: greedy fishermen, in their quest for fish of high economic value, had killed all the other fish in the process. The silence of the depths produced in him a fear he had never experienced, as though he had lost his family and direction and perhaps were even the only living being left on Earth. With waste rebar, he depicts the lines of ocean currents in creating the space and perspective of the sea as a way to speak on the ocean’s behalf. When it comes down to it, if all that is left is the scenery above the surface of the water, then what’s the use?
